How to Find Ancestor's Records in Bavaria
What kind of records does this page talk
about?
Birth resp. Baptism
Death resp.
Burial
Marriage
You want
- to find your
ancestors' records after 1876: You have to contact the "Standesamt"
(civil registry office) of the "Gemeinde" (township) your ancestor's village
belonged to.
Note 1: Only direct descendants are entitled to receive
information from the Standesamt.
Note 2: The address of the Standesamt is
usually the same as the towns' hall. If not, they are flexible enough to forward
your enquiry.
- to find your ancestors' records before 1875: You
have to contact the church archives. Only in exceptional cases, it's the parish
who still keeps the records. Usually the parish doesn't even have a single copy
of the records. Check at first, which parish your ancestors belonged
to.
The next step is to find out in which archives the records are kept
now.
